What Kiyonal is

Kiyonal is a wound sealant for cut branches, made in Japan and supplied by Kikuwa. It is a soft paste applied straight from the tube: spread over a fresh cut it covers the exposed live tissue, promotes quick healing and lowers the risk of disease and drying out.

When to use it

Seal cuts at pruning time, especially the larger flush or concave cuts where a ring of cambium is exposed. Sealing matters most on cuts you want to close over cleanly, which is why Kiyonal is often used alongside a concave cutter.

Kiyonal or the putty pastes

Kiyonal spreads thinly and works into any cut shape, which suits ordinary pruning cuts. The firmer putty pastes, white for deciduous trees and green for conifers, are pressed over larger wounds and grafts where a thicker, longer-lasting cover is wanted.
