What annealed aluminium wire is

Annealing heat-softens the aluminium so the wire bends smoothly by hand, then holds the branch in the position you set. Aluminium is the standard training wire for most species: easy to apply, easy to remove, and gentle on bark.

Choosing a thickness for the branch

The usual guide is wire about one third the thickness of the branch being bent. If a wire will not hold the bend, move up a thickness or apply a second wire alongside the first rather than forcing it.

Using it

Anchor the wire first, in the soil or on the trunk, then wind it along the branch at about 45 degrees before bending. Check wired branches as they thicken and remove the wire before it bites into the bark.

Roll size

A 500g roll suits wiring a few trees. If you wire regularly or work on larger material, the 1kg roll is the same annealed aluminium wire.
