A high-aeration, fast-draining mix for germinating seeds and striking cuttings, sifted to remove dust. It is a propagation medium, not a bonsai potting substrate: the job is to keep oxygen at roots that do not exist yet.
Damping off and cutting rot both start with water sitting around stems and new roots. An open, fast-draining mix lets water pass through in seconds and keeps air in the root zone, so seedlings and cuttings stay oxygenated between waterings.
Fill trays or small pots, sow or insert cuttings, and keep the mix evenly moist rather than wet. Once a seedling or cutting has an established root system, pot it on into a growing medium such as Keith's Mix or straight pumice.
