What is in the bag

Keith's Mix is the house blend: akadama substitute, pumice and pine bark, sifted to size and ready to use straight from the bag. It is free-draining with enough water retention to suit most species, so one bag covers a mixed collection without blending anything yourself.

Which trees it suits

Most deciduous trees, figs and general collection trees go straight into it. Conifers that like a drier root zone can take the same mix with a handful of kiryuzuna or extra pumice through it. Azaleas and satsuki are the exception and go into kanuma instead.

Mixing your own instead

The components are all sold separately: Sakadama, Japanese pumice and Orchiata pine bark. Blending your own lets you shift the ratios per tree; this bag is for when you want the result without the mixing.

How much a repot needs

As a guide, a 30 × 22 × 8 cm pot takes about 5 litres and a 40 × 30 × 9 cm pot about 10 litres, so a 10 litre bag repots one large tree or two medium ones. The fill table above lists more sizes.
